Vessel profiles

A communication profile for every vessel.

A ship on an ocean passage and one working the coast don't carry the same connectivity. Each vessel gets its own profile: cellular, satellite and WhatsApp, in whatever order and combination suits it. It decides how emergency alerts and welfare calls reach that vessel, and you change it yourself when its trade changes.

How it works

Built for vessels, not borrowed from a call centre.

Generic answering services run the same process for every kind of business. OpenWater ERT is designed around crews, vessels and the way an incident actually unfolds at sea, with an emergency line first and welfare checks alongside it.

Inbound

24/7 emergency line

A number crews can call at any hour. It answers instantly and runs a structured intake: vessel, position and incident type, from collision and flooding to fire or injury. Once the incident type is identified, it reads back your company's immediate actions and texts your full procedure to the vessel, while your duty manager is alerted in parallel.

  • No queue, no hold music
  • Your procedures, read back word for word
Outbound

Scheduled welfare checks

Calls go out to each vessel while it's at berth. The crew member answers a short set of welfare questions you define, and every answer is recorded against the vessel, the call and the time.

  • Starts on arrival at berth
  • Unanswered checks escalate automatically

Purpose-built for vessels

The usual gap
One script shared across allied health clinics, councils and trades businesses.
With OpenWater ERT
Incident types, intake questions and escalation designed around vessels, crews and positions at sea.

Your emergency procedures, on the call

The usual gap
Whoever answers improvises, or reads a script that was never written for your fleet.
With OpenWater ERT
Your company's own immediate actions for each incident type, read back on the call, with the full procedure texted to the vessel.

Zero hold time, zero shift variance

The usual gap
Intake quality depends on which agent picks up, and how busy the night shift is.
With OpenWater ERT
Every call is answered immediately and run the same way, at 0300 exactly as at 1500.

Redundant escalation

The usual gap
A missed call sits unnoticed until someone thinks to follow it up.
With OpenWater ERT
Your duty manager is alerted while the call is still running, and an unanswered alert moves straight to the next contact.

Structured, timestamped records

The usual gap
A summary email typed up after the call, in whatever words the agent chose.
With OpenWater ERT
Every answer and every escalation step stored as structured, timestamped data you can search, filter and report on.

Self-service configuration

The usual gap
Changing a procedure or a contact means raising a ticket with someone else's support team.
With OpenWater ERT
Edit your procedures, welfare questions and escalation roster yourself, from your own dashboard, whenever you need to.

Welfare checks that start on arrival

A welfare check can start automatically the moment a vessel arrives at berth, using live vessel position data. If an arrival isn’t detected, the check still runs at its scheduled time.

Compliance

Audit-ready, day and night.

Data protection

Hosted in Australia. Each organisation's records are isolated by the database itself, not just hidden in the interface, so one company's data never appears in another's.

Audit-ready records

Every emergency call, escalation step, welfare answer and retry is timestamped and kept as a structured log, aligned to seafarer welfare recordkeeping expectations rather than a list of raw call times.

Always-on reliability

The line answers at any hour without depending on who is rostered on. Multi-channel escalation means a single failed call doesn't stall the chain.

Emergency response, built by people who have stood the watch.

We know what a call for help at 0300 needs to sound like, and what a clear, timestamped record is worth when someone asks what happened. OpenWater ERT comes from the team behind OpenWater LMS, and is built around how ships actually operate.

FAQ

Questions operators ask us

How is this different from a call centre?

A call centre puts a person on a shared script, so each call depends on who answers and how busy they are. OpenWater ERT answers every emergency call instantly and runs the same structured intake each time, designed specifically for vessels. You set the procedures and the escalation roster yourself, and every answer is stored as a timestamped record rather than a summary written up afterwards.

Does the line give emergency advice?

No. Each company writes its own emergency procedures for each incident type. Once the incident type is identified, the line reads back your immediate actions word for word and texts the full procedure to the vessel, while your duty manager is alerted in parallel. It never improvises. If you haven't written a procedure for that incident type, the line says so and escalates.

What happens if a call fails?

An unanswered or dropped call doesn't stop the process. The call is retried according to the vessel's communication profile, and a parallel alert goes out on another channel, such as WhatsApp, to the contacts on your escalation roster. Every attempt and its outcome is recorded in the audit trail.

Can we use our own escalation contacts?

Yes. The escalation roster is yours: you choose who is contacted, in what order and on which channels, and you can change it at any time from your dashboard without contacting us.

Is our data kept separate from other companies'?

Yes. Each organisation's records are isolated at the database level, not just hidden in the interface, so one company's data never appears in another's. All data is hosted in Australia.

Which channels can a vessel be reached on?

Cellular, satellite and WhatsApp, in any combination. Each vessel has its own communication profile, so a coastal vessel and one on an ocean passage can be set up differently.

How is it priced?

Pricing depends on the size of your fleet. Book a walkthrough and we'll take you through it.
